The Obama Administration Had Evidence Ilhan Married Her Brother
The New York Times has been actively doing some actual, real reporting lately. I wonder what they’re up to. First, they put up an accurate report about the sham candidate in Alaska. It was late, but at least they did it. Today, they reported that the Obama administration found evidence of fraud involving Somalian refugee Ilhan Omar in 2016. The Obama DOJ ignored it, claiming the case was past the statute of limitations. That wasn’t exactly true. Additionally, former President Barack Obama has been attacking the Trump administration for investigating Ilhan Omar.
The New York Times reported Omar was investigated for entering into a sham marriage in 2009 to help a man suspected of being her brother obtain a green card, according to current and former officials familiar with the matter.
The F.B.I. and Department of Homeland Security investigated the marriage in summer 2016, during the Obama administration, and found some evidence that it was fraudulent, current and former officials said.
Omar has long called it a right-wing conspiracy theory that federal officials debunked during her first race for elected office in 2016.
Obama’s Administration Ignored the Evidence
The case stalled because they said the potential felony was outside the five-year statute of limitations. However, according to Julie Kelly, immigration fraud is an exception to the five-year rule, and she is in Congress. She found this evidence while running for the Minnesota state House, which she won.
“Federal agents in Minnesota opened an investigation, according to several people familiar with the matter. They found evidence suggesting that Mr. Elmi and Ms. Omar were siblings, according to the six former and current officials familiar with the case. But because prosecutors did not pursue the matter and the agents had limited investigative tools, the officials said.”
The Somali community knew about it, and only one person spoke up.
She was elected to Congress in 2018, despite being a suspected felon.
The Times article also said that when immigration officials asked Elmi for more proof the marriage was real, he left the country and dropped his green card petition. Prosecutors let it go over the five-year statute of limitations.
NYT reports today that the Obama DOJ first started investigating Ilhan Omar (alias) marriage to her brother ten years ago. “Federal agents in Minnesota opened an investigation, according to several people familiar with the matter. They found evidence suggesting that Mr. Elmi and Ms. Omar were siblings, according to the six former and current officials familiar with the case. But, because prosecutors did not pursue the matter, the agents had limited investigative tools, the officials said.”
After rumors of the sham marriage—it was well known in Minneapolis’ Somali community back then—threatened to derail her run for state representative, the Obama appointed U.S. Attorney for Minnesota stepped in to save her with this extraordinary letter to her attorney.
She was elected to Congress in 2018.
Andrew Luger was later rewarded with the same appointment from Joe Biden. He then worked closely with—guess who?—Lisa Monaco.

Lisa Monaco was involved. No surprises there.
Obama’s Big Lie
Then, despite his own administration finding evidence of fraud, Barack Obama blasted out a lengthy statement slamming the Trump administration for investigating her following the FBI raid on her home earlier this month.
Here is part of what he wrote on X while knowing the truth:
It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized ….
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. …
The Statute Might Not Apply
Despite the statute of limitations, Omar’s birthdate and her father’s status might pull her back into a situation where she can’t serve in Congress and could be denaturalized.
Steinberg told Glenn Beck that the most important part of the investigation may involve Omar’s father.
According to David, his reporting indicates Omar’s father served in the Somali military before eventually entering the United States as a refugee. David alleges that information about the father’s background was concealed during the immigration process. Unlike many older allegations involving Omar herself, David argued that fraud tied to an original immigration application could still have legal consequences.
HSI contacted Steinberg in January 2025, and Steinberg turned over his research.
I studied evidence from Scott Johnson at Powerlineblog and independent journalists David Steinberg and Preya Samsundar. I have no doubt she married her brother, who is allegedly gay. Her father appears to have been a top military officer in the Barré genocidal regime. I base this on the preponderance of the evidence. He did not disclose that on his immigration application; instead, he said he was a teacher.
