Sayed Mohassib Arrested in Brutally Stabbing of a Jogger

The NYPD arrested a man Saturday in connection with the brutal stabbing of Katie Suarez, the 28-year-old jogger attacked on a Brooklyn running path last week.

The young woman was stabbed, an innocent person, only a half mile from home in a nice area of Queens, when she was stabbed in the neck several times. Her father found her. He went looking for her when she didn’t return home.

The suspect, Sayed Mohassib, is facing murder charges after he allegedly made statements about walking along the Belt Parkway with a knife and claims he blacked out, then woke up later covered in blood, two law enforcement sources familiar with the case said.

Blacked out?

He was known to police and remarkably worked for the Department of Education. Katie wasn’t raped, but the goal could have been rape. She was not robbed.

The 27-year-old suspect was reportedly tracked down, in part, via surveillance cameras near the path. They observed a male walking back and forth in the area, and video led to a barbershop. Sources said investigators got his ID from the barbershop.

Detectives were also able to later gather surveillance video near the suspect’s home, where the video appears to show him dumping bags of garbage the night of the murder.

Sources said the 27-year-old was a former military member and briefly an NYPD officer before he was dismissed and deemed psychologically unfit by both the military and the NYPD. Sayed recently worked at a school as a paraprofessional, and sources believe he went back to work after the killing.

He is a maniac, but he probably knew what he was doing when he ditched his knife and tried to cover up his crime.
