Leader Thune’s Only Role in the Senate Was to Block Trump’s Agenda
The Washington Sun reports that Senate Minority Leader John Thune is preparing to seek re-selection as GOP Leader next week. Interesting, seeing that he has been a very ineffective majority leader. Ineffectiveness must have been a goal because no one could be as ineffective as he is unless that was the goal. Now he wants to continue in leadership until 2027.
Does anyone really want to have him as Minority Leader until 2027? If he thinks the Mitch McConnell version of Republicanism is coming back, he is wrong.
Thune had the total power of government and about 50 bills passed by the House, but they are still sitting on a shelf. Thune never brought them to the floor. The more President Trump tried to get him to codify some of his great ideas, the more Thune seemed unable to act.
The only thing Thune did well was absolutely nothing.
According to Punchbowl News, Senate Majority Leader John Thune has left the door open to Supreme Court confirmations during the lame-duck period after the midterms. Potentially, conservative heroes Clarence Thomas or Sam Alito could consider retiring before Democrats take major control of the Senate for years.
Thune said, “It can be done. You’re talking about basically 60 days post-election in the lame duck…I certainly wouldn’t rule that out.”
I wouldn’t trust him on that or anything. He got nothing done in two years, and I think it was deliberate. An Obama-appointed Parliamentarian ran rings around him. He doesn’t like Donald Trump and wanted him to resign after January 6.
John Thune could have appointed Trump’s nominees that he’s been sitting on for two years. Instead, he refused to allow President Trump any recess appointments.
Thune has enshrined nothing on the agenda into law, and never tried to pressure his Senate to do it. He never acted on the SAVE Act or DOGE cuts. All the border controls President Trump implemented, all of his executive orders, can be erased with the stroke of a pen.
The Senate leader did nothing to stop rogue judges. When you have judges running the presidency, you’d think he’d consider putting the worst of them on notice.
One could always count on him to blame his anonymous senators for the endless stalemates, even though he could have threatened to take their committees away. Everything President Trump implemented is what Thune and his colleagues campaigned on. It was all talk.
