The Billion Dollar Obama Library Owes The Subcontractors Millions

The Obama Foundation now expects its Chicago presidential center to cost about $1 billion. That is roughly triple the original estimate of $300 million to $350 million.

According to Fox News, the foundation’s Emily Bittner said that “While we continue to reconcile costs and plan ahead for additional capital improvements, we anticipate our total cost for constructing the campus is approximately $1 billion — again, all raised in private contributions.”

The center was supposed to open in 2021 but didn’t open until June 2026. The foundation’s liabilities rose to about $103.5 million in 2025, and its borrowing hit about $63.5 million by July 2026.

When the foundation put the cost at $909 million on Sept. 26, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the figure doesn’t include the $123 million in publicly paid-for infrastructure improvements made in and around the site.

The foundation has substantial assets, yet some of the subcontractors who helped build it say they are still fighting to recover millions of dollars in disputed payments. Fox News reports that this includes the minority-owned businesses the project was intended to support.

The Center partly serves as a Marxist activism center.

Then when it’s all done, it will look like this:
